Registration requirements

A Dietitian from abroad can’t be employed in the publicly-funded health sector unless their qualifications have been recognised by the relevant competent authority.

In order to work as a Dietitian in Ireland you need to validate your degree through the Validation Unit of the Department of Health. Dietitians are the only nutrition professionals to be regulated by law, and are governed by the code of ethics and professional practice to ensure that they always work to the highest standard.

See www.dohc.ie/public/foreignqualification/foreign_validation.html, for the Dietitian Application Form and a useful Dietetics – FAQ’s. In the FAQ’s you can find all the relevant information regarding the validation procedure.

Once your degree has been validated you can apply for  jobs at the HSE
Positions that are currently  available can be found on the following websites:

www.careersinhealthcare.ie

www.indi.ie/jobs-careers/vacancies.html

Because the profession of Dietitian is regulated by the government, the government has precedence on recruitment/replacement of staff in the HSE.  This is not applicable for jobs outside the HSE.

It is advisable to become a member of the Irish Nutrition & Dietetic Institute. This is the professional organisation for Dietitians in Ireland. There are a number of benefits to this membership which could be of use when settling down in Ireland, finding a job and creating a network. See https://www.indi.ie. As an EU national you are entitled to come to Ireland to take up employment or self-employment. You do not need an employment permit.
